The main surf window. Consistent swells from the southwest make this the best time for both beginners and experienced surfers. June to September offers the most powerful waves.

The busiest and most exciting time of year. Surf competitions, beach parties, and a huge international crowd. Book accommodation well in advance. Prices are higher but the energy is unmatched.

The east coast gets its rainy season. Many places close but those that stay open offer great deals. The beaches are quieter, the jungle is lush, and you get Arugam Bay almost to yourself.

Kumana National Park is open all year. The dry season from May to September is best for wildlife sightings. Leopards, elephants, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species are regularly spotted.

Arugam Bay has a surprisingly good food scene for such a small town. From fresh seafood to Sri Lankan rice and curry, here is where to eat.

The most popular spot in town. Fresh grilled seafood, cold Lionbeers, and a view of the surf break. Get the prawn curry or the tuna steak. Go at sunset.

The cheapest and best meal in town. A full plate of rice with dhal, coconut sambol, a vegetable curry, and sometimes fish costs less than $2. Ask locals where they eat, not where tourists go.

Getting there

How to reach Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is remote by design. That is half the charm. Here are the best ways to get here from wherever you are arriving from.

From Colombo Airport
Most common route
  • 1 Land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo.
  • 2 Take a private taxi or shuttle directly to Arugam Bay. Around 7 hours by road. Cost: $60 to $90 for the full car.
  • 3 Alternatively, take a train from Colombo Fort to Pottuvil via Badulla. Scenic, slow, and under $10 but takes around 10 to 12 hours total.
Local tip: Book a private taxi through your hotel. They organize reliable drivers who know the road well. We can arrange this for you too.

Continuing your trip
  • 1 From Ella: 3.5 hours by tuk-tuk or taxi through the jungle. Stunning drive. Around $35.
  • 2 From Kandy: 6 to 7 hours by car through the hill country. Scenically beautiful and worth the journey.
  • 3 From Batticaloa: 2 hours by bus or taxi. The closest major town with bus connections.
Local tip: The road from Ella is spectacular but has some rough sections. A taxi is worth it over the bus for this route.

Cheapest option
  • 1 From Colombo: Take the AC bus to Pottuvil from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Station. Departs daily at 6:30am and 9:30pm. Around $8 and takes 9 to 10 hours.
  • 2 From Pottuvil: Take a tuk-tuk 3km into Arugam Bay. Around $2 to $3.
Local tip: The night bus is popular but can be cold. Bring a light jacket. Book your seat the day before to guarantee a spot.

Getting Around Locally
Once you arrive
  • 1 Rent a bicycle for $3 to $5 per day. Most of town is flat and perfect for cycling.
  • 2 Rent a scooter for $10 to $15 per day. Best for reaching nearby beaches and the national park entrance.
  • 3 Tuk-tuks are everywhere and cheap. Negotiate the fare before you get in. Most trips around town should be under $2.
Local tip: International licenses are not required for scooters in Sri Lanka but ride carefully. The roads are shared with buffalo, dogs, and the occasional elephant.
